The style of blade is called Wharncliffe. It's D2 steel and was black coated and dull, with plastic handles. I ground the black off, sharpened it, and made some Cedar handles.
D2 tool steel is harder, and keeps an edge longer than 440. Very capable of tough cutting tasks.
